Debugging is a crucial part of development that allows you to step through your code, inspect variables, and quickly fix issues, without relying heavily on console logs. This makes the debugging process more efficient and enjoyable.

Getting Started

Before we begin, make sure you have the following tools installed:

  1. Visual Studio Code
  2. Node.js and npm
  3. A React project set up and ready to go. If you don’t have a React project, you can create one quickly with the following command:
npx create-react-app my-app

Configuring the Debugger

To configure the debugger in Visual Studio Code, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Run and Debug view by pressing Ctrl+Shift+D.
  2. Select the “create a launch.json file” link to create a launch.json debugger configuration file.
  3. Choose “Web App (Chrome)” from the dropdown list. This action will create a launch.json file in a new .vscode folder in your project. This file includes a configuration to launch your React app in a Chrome browser.

Modify the Configuration

By default, the generated launch.json file is set to use port 8080. For our React application, we need to change the port to 3000, which is the default port for React development servers. Your launch.json should look like this:

Start Your React Application

Now, open a new terminal in VS Code and start your React application by running:

This will launch the development server at http://localhost:3000.

Launch the Debugger

Once your development server is up and running, press F5 or click the green arrow in the Run and Debug panel. This will launch the Chrome browser and connect it to the debugger. You can now set breakpoints in your code by clicking next to the line numbers, which allows you to pause the execution and examine the state of your app.

Using Debugging Tools

With the debugger connected, you can use several powerful tools to navigate through your code:

  • Step Over (F10): Runs the current line of code and skips over any function calls, allowing you to continue with the main flow of your application
  • Step Into (F11): Dives into a function call, enabling you to see what happens inside the function
  • Step Out (Shift + F11): Exits a function and pauses after the function call is completed; useful when you want to finish executing the current function and continue debugging

These tools help you thoroughly inspect your code, understand the flow of your application, and identify where things might be going wrong.
