China is building the world's largest artificial island airport in Dalian, located in the northeastern part of the country.
The
Dalian Jinzhouwan International Airport will cover 20 square
kilometers, surpassing Hong Kong and Japan's island airports. Estimated
at $4.3 billion, it will handle up to 80 million passengers and 1
million tonnes of cargo annually.
The airport is set to boost Dalian's economy and connect it to global destinations. However, its location on an artificial
island raises concerns about vulnerability to natural disasters and
potential disruptions. The project is expected to be completed by 2035.
