Did you know TikTok is One of the Most Used Social Media Platforms in the US and Now it is Getting Banned
A new research by Northeastern University finds
that the social media landscape has been stable since the last four
years but there is one platform which is more popular. Yes, it's the
platform none other than TikTok
and it is a shame that it is getting banned in America. TikTok was the
one platform which was challenging other big platforms and was providing
dynamic and innovative experiences to the users.
TikTok is
getting banned in the US because of some security concerns as it is
owned by ByteDance, a parent company. Congress demands that TikTok
should divest from Chinese ownership or else it'll get banned, and it seems like it is getting banned now.
This has made many American users nervous, especially the ones who were
earning through influencing on TikTok. The research says that users on
TikTok are younger than users on other platforms, non-white people use
it more than white people and anyone with a high school degree or less
education is also active on TikTok as compared to other apps . It was also found that there are more Democrats than Republicans on the app, and women use TikTok more than men too.
Researchers also wanted to know which social media platforms capture
users’ attention the most and it was found that Meta (Instagram,
Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp) is the most dominating social media
company, capturing attention of 48% social media users. 19% of the
users’ attention is captured by YouTube (Alphabet), and TikTok captures
10% of the users’ attention. The researchers said that the number of
social media users on all platforms haven't changed much since 2020 in
the US.
There are some exceptions too, like Threads which is now
being used by 8% users, Reddit being used by 24% users of social media
and X being used by 29% users. The app which saw a major change in its
number of users was TikTok, with 22% people using it in 2020 to 41%
using it now. Even though Instagram has more users than TikTok, the
average user time spent on TikTok and Instagram is almost the same.
