Scientists are raising concerns as intense solar activity begins to significantly impact Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites.
Research led by NASA indicates that these solar eruptions can shorten a satellite's operational lifespan by up to 12 days. In 2024 alone, over 300 Starlink satellites fell from the sky due to the peak of the current solar cycle. The increased rate of reentry complicates space traffic management and makes orbital trajectories much harder to predict.
Beyond the loss of hardware, experts warn of potential environmental and safety risks. Rapid reentries may prevent satellites from burning up completely, increasing the chances of debris reaching the ground. Additionally, there are concerns about the long-term chemical impact of vaporized aluminum on the atmosphere and the rising risk of orbital collisions in increasingly crowded skies.
