Chinese automaker BYD has overtaken Tesla to become the world’s largest electric vehicle seller in 2025, marking a major turning point in the global EV race.
BYD delivered 2.26 million vehicles this year, a nearly 28% jump from last year, driven by strong demand in China and rapid expansion in overseas markets.
Tesla delivered 1.64 million vehicles, an 8% decline and its second straight annual drop, as it faced rising competition, political controversy, and the gradual phase-out of U.S. EV tax credits.
The shift highlights how China’s EV giants are reshaping the global auto industry and challenging long-standing market leaders.
