Scaphoid Fracture – Don’t Ignore Wrist Pain!
Scaphoid Fracture – Don’t Ignore Wrist Pain!
Fracture of the Scaphoid bone is one of the most common wrist injuries, especially after a fall.
How does it happen?
Usually caused by a fall on an outstretched hand or directly on the fingertips. The bone typically breaks at its waist (middle part).
Key Signs & Symptoms:
• Pain and swelling in the anatomical snuff box
• Tenderness on pressing the thumb and index finger
• Pain during wrist movement or grip
• Often mistaken for a simple sprain
Why is it serious?
The scaphoid has a delicate blood supply. In some people, blood vessels enter only from one side, so a fracture can cut off blood flow to the proximal part.
Complications include:
• Non-union (bone doesn’t heal properly)
• Avascular necrosis (death of bone tissue due to lack of blood supply)
• Long-term stiffness, especially in the midcarpal joint
Clinical Tip:
Even if X-ray looks normal initially, persistent snuff box pain should always be treated as a scaphoid fracture until proven otherwise.
Management:
• Early immobilization (thumb spica cast)
• Follow-up imaging if needed
• Physiotherapy after healing for mobility & strength
Early diagnosis = Better recovery!
