Did you know Bluesky Sees 17-Fold Increase in Moderation Reports for 2024 With Harassment and Trolling as Leading Complaints

 

Bluesky may have made the most of X’s downfall as hundreds flocked to the platform after seeing Musk’s entry into politics. However, it’s dealing with its fair share of problems including a rise in moderation reports.

The platform spoke about a sizeable growth on the app and how that impacted the team responsible for Trust and Safety. It also shared how the biggest reports arose from those users who experienced harassment, bullying, or intolerance. Trolling was another issue that spread on the app while it saw growth.  

 


Many went as far as to protest against the decisions made by moderators on different occasions. As per the reports shared by the company, it failed to address why it did or didn’t take action against respective people like those added to the most blocked list.

The firm says it added more than 23M people last year after it was the most sought-after app for those fleeing from Musk on X for different reasons. Throughout 2024, X rolled out a host of changes and not many were happy with them. This left them with no choice but to move on to another destination.


One of those changes had to do with how blocking works on X and also how it would use its data for training AI systems. Others were not happy with the way it was making progress during the 2024 US presidential elections. Musk’s entry into the world of politics and close friendship with Donald Trump was not appreciated by some who felt it was time to change.

The app saw a huge number of users also when Brazil chose to ban X after a heated altercation between the tech billionaire owner and the country’s supreme court. While it was restored in the end, that damage was certainly done.

The growing number of users meant a growing list of demands that arose due to this growth. We saw Bluesky raising its moderation team to nearly 100 moderators. It hoped to continue with this trend and hire more with time. There was a lot that the moderators were dealing with including the constant exposure of mental counseling to assist them get the difficult job done.

As a whole, there were close to 6.48M reports for moderation which is a 17-fold rise seen in the previous year. In 2023, the figure stood at just 358K.
