2024 was a great year for app developers. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to state that hundreds of millionaires arose during that time which is a clear signal of how many apps continue to deliver high stakes for their creators.

App revenue not only rose last year as per recent stats taken from AppIntelligence, but so many well-known apps continued to make it big throughout the year. Through AppFigures data, we found how so many apps and games rolled out in 2024.

The year ended with close to $1 million in gross revenue. This is enough for any developer to be removed from the company’s Small Business Program. But how many apps actually managed to do this is a question worth pondering.

442 apps and games were launched in 2024 which ended the year with a gross revenue of $1 million or more. To help you paint a clearer picture, 5,059 platforms ended up earning this much last year. And the latest batch made up 9% of the total.

Data further goes on to reveal how 20% of the latest batch full of millionaires continued to be apps while 80% were mostly games. Moreover, subscriptions and trends for rising revenue continue to be on the rise through the App Store and they keep getting stronger with time.

Meanwhile, AI-based apps continued to dominate and the same was the case for short drama platforms. Estimates continue to exist about how much these new millionaires brought to the table. The response is $117 million in gross revenue through App Store which is just about $1.3M for every app.

Now games made so much more revenue though. App intelligence revealed how new millionaires brought in gross revenue of $4.8 billion in terms of gross revenue. This is huge!

More than 50% of these new millions took on the role-playing games genre. Meanwhile, casual and adventure games tied for a second position with a share of 20% each. Meanwhile, action and strategy rounded up the top 5 categories for top-selling or most in-demand niche.

So next time someone asks you if there’s still money that can be made through games and apps through App Stores, be sure to tell them yes. This might be a great direction to head towards in 2025 but you need to make sure you design the right thing.
