Did you know Tech Giants Unite To Do More To Combat Hate Speech By Signing New Code of Conduct Integrated Into EU’s DSA

 

Leading tech companies have decided to join hands to combat hate speech with more resilience than before. This includes signing up for a new code of conduct that was combined into the Digital Services Act.

The names of those involved include Twitch, Facebook, X, Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Others on the list were LinkedIn, Dailymotion, Microsoft, Rakuten Viber, and Jeuxvideo.com.

The goal right now is to strengthen how these online apps tackle online content and the laws in place defining unlawful hate speech. The commissioner for democracy, rule of law, and consumer protection shared how such behavior threatens the core values of the EU’s democratic stability.


This is why the union of big tech for this cause is certainly welcomed and the EU hopes to work closely with these companies to combat the growing issue of hatred and crime in the region. They were similarly hopeful the latest code of conduct could give rise to a swift response and pave the way for more unity and less hate.

As it is, all online firms filed under the Digital Services Act have yearly independent audits. This will now entail being more mindful of the latest code of conduct. Moreover, the new terms laid down will need companies to be routinely monitored by a network of Monitoring Reporters.

This will speed up the rate of checks and reviews and remove hate speech at a quicker pace than before. The document says the companies will certainly add more efforts to review notices linked to hate speech that were attained from Monitoring Reporters within 24 hours. There will similarly be more automated checking tools to curb the rise in hate speech incidents.

The Commission and the European Board for Digital Services welcomed the idea of combining the code of conduct on curbing unlawful online hate speech into the DSA. This motivates more tech giants to add voluntary codes of conduct to put hate speech to rest.

As mentioned previously, the best way to move forward is to have support from all parties involved. And through this new agreement, it seems like things are right on track.
