Scientists from the University of Bristol and the UK Atomic Energy Authority have developed the world’s first nuclear-powered diamond battery that can generate electricity for up to 5,000 years.
The battery works by placing carbon-14 inside a diamond, where energy from radioactive decay is converted into a steady flow of electricity.
Researchers say the process is similar to how solar panels produce power, except this battery works nonstop without sunlight.
Because carbon-14 decays very slowly, the battery can keep producing energy for thousands of years without recharging or maintenance.
