The latest information on the character designs for Android 17 & 18 comes from a recent interview featured on Kanzenshuu, currently available on YouTube. Takashi Matsuyama, Toriyama's second manga assistant during his Dragon Ball days at Weekly Shonen Jump, confirmed that the legendary manga artist wasn't responsible for designing the Androids after his editor, Kazuhiko Torishima, infamously ridiculed his first choice of villains.

Nachi Mikami, Toriyama's wife, is the character designer for Androids 17 & 18. Fans have commonly speculated that this was the case, as Mikami's characters tend to be more fashionable than her husband's. However, Matsuyama's comment, reported at Manga Barcelona 2025 in Spain, is the first solid confirmation of Mikami's involvement.
