The Underwater Sleeping Bag: The Parrotfish's Mucus Cocoon !
In the vibrant, dangerous world of the coral reef, the night shift brings out some of the ocean's most feared predators, like moray eels and sharks. To survive the night, certain species of parrotfish have developed one of the most unique "security systems" in the animal kingdom. Every night before settling down to sleep, these fish secrete a thick, jelly-like mucus from specialized glands in their gills.
Within about 30 minutes, this mucus expands to form a transparent, bubble-like cocoon that completely envelops the fish. This isn't just for comfort; it’s a high-tech survival tool. The primary function of the cocoon is to mask the fish's scent. By trapping its odors inside the bubble, the parrotfish becomes "invisible" to predators that rely on their keen sense of smell to hunt in the dark.
