Image
Money Heist is by far the most anticipated title coming in September, with the Netflix series’ fifth and final season kicking off on September 3. The first weekend of the month is packed in fact. Fast & Furious 9 makes its very belated entry into Indian cinemas on September 2. Amazon has a new Cinderella musical movie due on September 3. And Marvel has not one but two titles on September 3, with Shang-Chi taking off in cinemas, while Black Widow appears on streaming. Other major titles internationally in September include the sixth and final season of Lucifer , debuting September 10 on Netflix, with the third season of Sex Education following a week later on September 17. From India in September, the biggest name is TVF’s Kota Factory, which moves to Netflix for its second season — it’s out September 24. Saif Ali Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Yami Gautam star in the horror comedy Bhoot Police, available September 17 on Disney+ Hotstar. Also on that day,

1 killed, 1 critically injured in Far South Side motorcycle crash

One person was killed and another critically injured in a traffic crash Tuesday night in Calumet Heights on the Far South Side. About 8:20 p.m., a 30-year-old man was traveling on his motorcycle with a female passenger in the 1600 block of East 95th Street when they struck the passenger side of a silver Chrysler Pacifica trying to make a left turn to travel east on 95th Street, Chicago police said. The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The female passenger, whose age is unknown, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center with unspecified injuries and was listed in critical condition, police said. The 26-year old female driver of the Pacifica had an 18-year-old woman and a 15-year-old male with her at the time of the crash, police said. All three were in good condition, police said. Image
Battlegrounds Mobile India is returning some of the items previously unavailable for transfer from PUBG Mobiles via in-game mails. The South Korean developer Krafton has shared through a post on the official website that items like 2021 Spring Mask, McLaren 570S Coupe and its colour options, M16A4 gun, and more will now be available to Battlegrounds Mobile India players who owned these items in PUBG Mobile. Krafton officially released Battlegrounds Mobile India on July 2 and had allowed players to transfer their data like inventory, achievements, currency, and more from PUBG Mobile till July 9. PUBG Mobile was banned in India in September 2020 over data privacy issues. Its developer Krafton came back to India after shedding its China ties with Battlegrounds Mobile India in May this year. The game then officially launched on July 2 with the ability to transfer data over from PUBG Mobile so that players do not lose the progress they had made, but the facility was indefinite

Activists call for police accountability outside COPA headquarters

Community leaders and supporters at a rally outside the Civilian Office of Police Accountability on Tuesday called for justice for a woman seen in a viral video apparently being grabbed and restrained by a Chicago police officer at North Avenue Beach last weekend. In the video, a Black woman, Nikkita Brown, is seen with her dog as an officer appears to try and force her to leave the area. Brown’s attorney released a statement Sunday calling the incident “an obvious case of racial profiling.” Tuesday’s rally co-organizer Troy Gaston, 39, claims he received footage of the incident and released it to a local TV news station. “I believe that this rally…wakes up our communities to be involved in the movement wrapped around Black liberation,” Gaston said. About 30 demonstrators at the rally listened as community activists spoke about the importance of police accountability. The officer seen in the video has been placed on paid desk duty while COPA, the agency charged with lookin

Democrats push newly drawn legislative maps through Illinois House, Republicans cry ‘sham’

Image
House Democrats pushed revised maps of newly drawn legislative boundaries through their chamber on Tuesday, calling the latest versions consistent with “the diversity and values of our great state” — but Republicans blasted the remap redo as a “travesty” and a “sham.” Despite actual population figures and a new round of public hearings, Democrats and Republican lawmakers were essentially back where they were three months ago. Introducing the redistricting measures on the House floor, state Rep. Lisa Hernandez, D-Cicero, said the updated maps are “not only consistent with the U.S. and Illinois constitutions,” as well as the federal voting rights act, they are “consistent with the diversity and values of our great state.” House Republicans argued the Democrats were consistent with what the GOP characterized as the unilateral, one-sided, secretive process in drawing the hotly contested political maps, which will chart the next decade of elections in Illinois.

Japan Sees Peril in US Chip Hub to Counter China

Japan is worried that US plans to pour billions of dollars into chip manufacturing to fend off China could finish off what’s left of a Japanese semiconductor industry that once dominated the world. After “three lost decades”, according to Japan’s industry ministry, the country’s share of global chip manufacturing has fallen from a half to a tenth as it leaked customers to cheaper rivals and failed to maintain a lead in cutting edge production. As China and the United States, driven by a trade war and security concerns, ramp up support for the manufacturing of chips that run everything from smartphones to missiles, officials worry Japan will be squeezed out altogether. “We can’t just continue what we have been doing, we have to do something on a completely different level,” former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told fellow ruling LDP party members in May at a first party meeting to discuss how the country can be a leading digital economy. Community groups rally in the Loop, pushing for immigration reform

As Sam Sung Cheol Park joined a rally with immigration advocates Tuesday afternoon downtown, a looming deadline could alter his life. Park, of River North, came to the United States as a child and is allowed to legally work since he is protected through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. But the program currently doesn’t provide a path for him to become a U.S. citizen. And if he can’t renew his work authorization next month, he could lose his job and be at risk of deportation if an approval is delayed because of backlogs at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The 31-year-old attorney supports his family as well as his parents, and the uncertainty of his immigration status is one reason he and hundreds of other people marched through the Loop on Tuesday urging Congress to create a path for immigrants to be able to obtain citizenship. “We want to make sure that all members of the community that we serve are included,” Park said, who also volunteers a

Smartphone Shipments Expected to Keep Growing as Emerging Markets Show Recovery: IDC

Smartphone shipments will continue to grow as emerging markets are showing strong recovery following the COVID-19 related lockdowns. Latest data from research firm IDC suggests that in 2021 global smartphone shipments are expected to grow by 7.4 percent. The larger markets will still show lower shipment volumes compared to 2019 (pre-pandemic) but growing markets are expected to contribute to the recovery. The firm also notes that 5G smartphones are the main driving factor of the growth. Compared to smartphone shipment volumes in 2019, last year and this year have shown minimal growth but growth nonetheless, as per latest data by International Data Corporation ( IDC ). This year, the shipments of smartphones are expected to grow 7.4 percent and by 2022, they will reach 1.37 billion units. In 2023, shipments are said to grow by 3.4 percent. For 2021, 13.8 percent growth in iOS device shipments and 6.2 percent growth in Android device shipments contributed to the 7.4 percent o
